Canzona for brass, percussion and strings (2005)

Commissioned by the Seattle Symphony. Premiere 6 January 2005, Gerard Schwarz, conductor. Published by MMB. 12’.

Review: “A soaring premiere.” Melinda Bargreen, The Seattle Times, 8 January 2005.
“Schiff’s Canzona, scored for brass, percussion and strings, is an effective work that is often quite beautiful in sound. But never for too long: it is punctuated with bolts and dots of dissonant sounds, especially for the brass and percussion. The piece is not long, but seemed longer because its material is often so interesting and unpredictable. The brass — some on stage and some in the boxes overlooking the stage — gave its assignments their due.” R. M Campbell Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 8 January 2005.
